Report: Black men 5x more likely than white men to be accused of crime

A new report on race equity released by Ninth Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson confirms a disproportionate number of arrests of people of color.

Wilson said she began improving data collection at the Ninth Circuit Solicitor’s Office in early 2015 to better identify and understand any racial disparities, a news release states.

She teamed with researchers from Justice Innovation Lab, Prosecutorial Performance Indicators, and Loyola University at Chicago to study data from her office.

“This report not only identifies the source of systemwide inequities, it provides a path forward to building a more fair justice system,” Justice Innovation Lab founding Executive Director Jared Fishman said. “Prosecutors have an essential role to play in mitigating existing inequities and building a more equitable future. Justice Innovation Lab looks forward to our continued work in Charleston.”
