Judge rejects plea deal in Ahmaud Arbery federal hate crime case

Justice Innovation Lab Founding Executive Director Jared Fishman was interviewed by CNN’s Laura Jarrett regarding the Ahmaud Arbery federal hate crime case on February 1, 2022. Fishman explained that there is a tension between competing demands of justice – the desire for retribution and the need for truth telling, in this case, acknowledging that Mr. Arbery’s murder was racially motivated. “What this event has underscored is how our legal system is ill-equipped to achieve the justice the victims and the community demand,” he said.
