Walmart hosts JIL at Racial Equity Milestone Meeting

By Kelli L. Ross

BENTONVILLE, AR — Walmart hosted Justice Innovation Lab (JIL) at its 2nd Annual Racial Equity Milestone Meeting on June 22–23, which highlighted Walmart and the Walmart Foundation’s strategic investments in promising innovations for more equitable outcomes across the United States. JIL’s Founding Executive Director Jared Fishman and Director of Programs and Prosecution Partnerships Jarvis Idowu (pictured right) participated.

Justice Innovation Lab is so grateful for the Walmart.org Center for Racial Equity’s work on criminal justice. The single biggest barrier to using data for criminal justice reform is access to clean, reliable data sets. Support from the Walmart Foundation and others enable JIL to provide more jurisdictions with the information they need to improve outcomes in their justice systems.

“To prevent the cycle of incarceration, we must scale and strengthen court and community-based diversion and deflection programs,” said Marvin Carr, Director, Walmart.org Center for Racial Equity. “Justice Innovation Lab helps equip law enforcement and local leaders with data-driven tools to reach more equitable outcomes.”

This event was the first holistic update on Walmart’s racial equity efforts in the two years since Walmart CEO Doug McMillon (pictured center) launched this effort to advance racial equity at Walmart and beyond using its business and philanthropy.
